Gretchen Waller is unemployed
and desperate for a job. So when John David Honeycutt offers her the opportunity
to help him write his family history, she jumps at it. What she doesn’t
realize is her employment will take her to Mill Hollow and the site of a murder that took place a few years before.
John is determined to
clear his grandfather of the murder charges, convinced someone else must have committed the crime. And Gretchen finds herself involved, as she and John become closer and he shares the family’s secrets
with her. But as they uncover new facts in the mysterious case, someone is determined
to keep them from identifying the real killer.
The romance between
John and Gretchen is lighthearted and playful as the two work in close proximity, gradually coming to know and appreciate
each other. But this reviewer would have enjoyed more suspense in the story. There is a hint of a ghost, and Gretchen has a moment of panic in the deep woods,
but overall, the suspenseful element wasn’t fully developed until the climax.
When Shadows Fall is an enjoyable novel, and leaves the reader with a feeling of satisfaction.
